Chris Cornell, vocalist of Soundgarden, Audioslave, and a solo artist in his own right, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017 in Detroit, Michigan. He was 52.

Chris Cornell, vocalist of Soundgarden, Audioslave, and a solo artist in his own right, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017 in Detroit, Michigan. He was 52.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery, Cornell’s representative, called the death “sudden and unexpected” and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement also said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

According to published reports, Cornell’s death is being investigated as a possible suicide. Police stated that Cornell’s wife had called and asked a family friend to check on Cornell, who was staying at the MGM Grand Hotel. After forcing the door open, the friend found Cornell on the bathroom floor.

Cornell is survived by his wife, Vicky, two daughters; and a son.
